Nino Matrtaj was born in Piešt'any, Czechoslovakia, moving to Bojnice and later to Bratislava where he attended school until the invasion of the Warsaw Pact forces. Nino decided to leave Czechoslovakia, and travelled as a tourist to Vienna, Austria, where his application was processed quickly at the Canadian consulate. He arrived in Canada in 1968, landing in Montreal and taking up residence in Ottawa. Nino gained his teaching certificate, and became a physical education teacher and sports coach. His immediate family eventually joined him in Canada.
