Martin Jelinowicz was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. His family was on vacation in 1968 during the Warsaw Pact invasion, and upon their return realized they would need to leave to ensure a better life. They obtained tourist visas to Sweden, immigrating to Canada from there. Martin studied civil engineering at university, and after several jobs became a freelancer in technical drawings in 1982. He has also been a landlord and school bus driver. Martin is now the president of the Toronto Branch of the Czech and Slovak Association of Canada, and helps organize cultural events for the community.
