Barbara Sherriff was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her family moved to Most, North Bohemia after the communist takeover in 1948, and later went to Mezibori. After the Soviet-led invasion in 1968, Barbara’s family faked the letter of invitation necessary to receive a visa and fled to Vienna, Austria. They came to Ontario, Canada in 1969, via Stuttgart, Germany. Barbara studied languages at the University of Toronto. After spending ten years in Germany working for Radio Free Europe, she returned to Canada with her husband Mike. Barbara now works as a freelance translator.
