The Wardrobe Trunk held a Surprise

A Wardrobe Trunk. Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 (L2013.1857.1).

An Excerpt from The Immigration Story of Beatrice Maud Crutcher, English War Bride

The Lady Nelson arrived in Halifax Harbour the morning of June 2nd 1946, a beautiful sunny morning. The bands were playing to welcome the troops home and brides to Canada. We were all escorted through customs with our great big trunks. Mine was called a Wardrobe Trunk, standing four feet high with lots of drawers. It wasn’t until I arrived in Orillia, that Jim asked if I came through customs O.K. I wondered why, and he said he had put a German machine gun in my trunk. I was flabbergasted; I certainly wouldn’t have agreed had I known anything about that. It gave him a good laugh.
